Bernard Strange
Banjo Clock

[Home]

I am seeking any information about this clock, it's maker Bernard Strange, or his family.
Found inside the clock was a paper which reads:

This clock was made in Taunton, Mass. in 1857 by BARNEY STRANGE, a machinist of the seventh generation of his family in America and of the Strange family in Taunton, of which in historical retrospect, editorially in "THE TAUNTON GAZETTE" it once said "With native ability like the Stranges, Babbitts, etc. who turned out whole families with fine mechanical brains and learned hands."
Born - Freetown, Mass. April 25, 1807
Died - Taunton, Mass. Feb. 20, 1867
Son of Joseph Strange and Amita Briggs
then of Freetown Mass.

It was given by him to his nephew Emerson Chandler Strange of Taunton. Then to his grandniece by the latter to his daughter Annie Maria King of Taunton, then to her son Louis Bradford King of Newton. Then to his great great grand-nephew by the latter to his son Louis Bradford King, Jr. of Newton Mass. who is of the eleventh generation of his branch of the Strange family in America.

New info provided by:
Eric Kinney, Webmaster, Sundial Time Systems www.sundialtime.com

JOSEPH STRANGE resided at Freetown, Westport and Taunton and died at Taunton. By wife Amity he had Jirah, Elias, Barney and Gardner. Gardner was born Oct 10 1805 died May 8 1865, and married Lydia B Babbitt of Taunton.

Here is a description of the clock with links to view close-ups of the case and movement.

Case is built VERY soundly with double wall construction. The outside wood is what looks to be solid butternut with beautiful graining. It was missing the glasses so I had Tom Moberg paint the replacements. The original untouched paint on iron dial measures 12" diameter, and the hands are hand filed. Case measures 51" long by 19.5" wide (at lower door) and with the exception of the replaced glasses (all three) is totally original. The movement has a seconds beating pendulum with maintaining power, and is like nothing I have ever seen before!
